Black Cat Cookie Jar
In recognition of the Halloween celebration, this week Architecturals.net is offering our lucky winner a vintage figural ceramic cookie jar featuring the likeness of a black cat. Throughout history, black cats have been unfairly equated with the occult. Greek mythology taught that a woman named Galenthias was turned into a cat and became a priestess at the temple of Hecate. She became known as the Dark Mother, and has been credited as the Mother of Witchcraft. During the 12th and 13th century, those accused of practicing witchcraft in Europe, were often people who kept black cats. Their accusers would identify these pets as the witches familiars, and it was believed that the accused witch had the power to metamorphose into the form of a cat. During the witch-hunts in the 17th century, accused witches' were burned with their pet cats. Today, superstitions concerning black cats have survived. In Europe and the U.S., black cats signify bad luck, while in England, it is said to be good luck if a black cat crosses your path. Measuring 11 inches tall and 5 inches across the base, the only marks found on this piece are USA and 207, which are scratched into the base.
